An Unexpected Final

2024 MLB Home Run Derby: Witt Defeats Garcia for the Championship

An Unexpected Final

ARLINGTON -- Sean Campbell was watching the proceedings of the Home Run Derby from a suite in the upper reaches of Globe Life. This year's Home Run Derby field was not only star-studded but also featured an intriguing mix of young and old sluggers.

The final matchup pitted two unlikely opponents against each other: Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals and Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers. Witt, a 22-year-old shortstop, had never hit more than 20 home runs in a season before this year. Garcia, a 29-year-old outfielder, had hit 29 homers in 2021 but had never participated in the Home Run Derby before.

An Exciting Battle

The final round was a back-and-forth affair, with both Witt and Garcia trading blows. In the end, it was Witt who prevailed, hitting a total of 42 home runs to Garcia's 39. Witt's victory marked the first time a player from the Royals had won the Home Run Derby since Mike Moustakas in 2017.

A Lasting Impression

Witt's victory was a reminder that anything is possible in the Home Run Derby, regardless of age or experience. It was also a testament to the young player's prodigious talent and the bright future that lies ahead for him.
