Avalanche Center Departs After Trade Request

Three-Way Deal Concludes 18 Months of Speculation

In a long-awaited move, the Colorado Avalanche have traded star center Matt Duchene to the Ottawa Senators. The three-team deal, which also involved the Nashville Predators, was announced Sunday evening.

Duchene's departure comes after 18 months of speculation and rumors, sparked by his trade request at the end of the 2016-17 season. The 27-year-old was reportedly unhappy with his role in Colorado and sought a fresh start elsewhere.

The Avalanche received forward Vladislav Namestnikov and a first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft from the Senators. They also acquired defenseman Samuel Girard from the Predators in the deal.

The trade marks the end of an era for the Avalanche, who drafted Duchene third overall in 2009. He emerged as one of the team's top offensive players, scoring 120 goals and 253 assists in 581 career games with Colorado.
